We are made by 46 years of strong and solid history.

Since our establishment in 1972, we have been leading the way in the areas of design, manufacturing, sales, installation and the servicing of a comprehensive range of material handling systems and equipment in the Asia-Pacific region. This success is reflected by the establishment of partnerships, selection of equipment and support facilities that we offer through our regional companies and branches based in different countries.

1972-1980

Starting Up With Strong Partners

1972

It all started with the signing of an agency and manufacturing licence agreement between Singaporean based Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) and the German Demag Foerdertechnik AG, which formed Material Handling Engineering Ltd in 1972. The two partners would provide a strong backbone to the newly formed company, bringing in the very best of their respective corporate worlds. Jebsen & Jessen, a diversified regional business group operating in South East Asia, would provide the strong regional footprint, market knowledge and network, while Demag Foerdertechnik AG—later to eventually become Demag Cranes & Components—would bring in their high-quality products and know-how, as one of the world's leading suppliers of industrial cranes, crane components, harbour cranes and port automation technology.

As soon as the conclusion of the agency and licensing contract was settled with Demag Foerdertechnik AG, MHE Singapore and MHE Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur were formed as wholly-owned subsidiaries of Jebsen & Jessen, Singapore.

Still in the inaugural year, our new company could also reach an agency agreement for Vahle Power Systems – a partnership that also continues to this date. We still offer a comprehensive range of Vahle power electrification rail systems which are widely used in high-tech industries such as electronics, car assembly, communications and heavy industries, namely steel mills, shipyards and ports. The new addition to our product portfolio went hand in hand with our crane range, so we were capable to deliver a more complete set of solutions to our customers.

1974

With this initial product portfolio of cranes and rail systems to start with, we then expanded our regional presence with the formation of MHE in Thailand in 1974 and MHE in Indonesia in 1975, where we set up another production facility in Surabaya one year later.

Lifting MHE to the Next Level

1983

In 1983 we extended our product portfolio of lifting solutions again with an agency agreement with Mannesmann Anlagenbau, a supplier of state-of-the-art building maintenance systems, which would later become Manntech GmbH. Their parent company Mannesmann AG had just recently taken over Demag Foerdertechnik, and so this further partnership was a very natural fit – on both a company and product level. Their building maintenance systems, or 'gondolas', are designed to meet the challenging shape and size of any building façade, using mountings and winches similar to the equipment for material handling. To date, many of these systems have been installed in landmark buildings across South East Asia.

1986

One and a half decades after our inception, our company would rise on a sounder foundation, when the joint venture agreement between Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) and Mannesmann Demag Foerdertechnik AG was established on December 12 in 1986 and enhanced our company profile. This mayor milestone of our company history gave us more strength to compete in the global corporate challenge, inextricably merging the most proficient expertise of the Asian business culture and market intelligence with solid German engineering of the highest standards.

1989

To cater our customers with even better solutions for their warehousing and logistics, we pursued another manufacturing licence agreement in 1989, together with Blue Giant Equipment of Ontario, Canada. With their docking equipment for supply chains, we were then able to provide the optimum equipment for moving cargo from the warehouse to transport vehicles such as lorries, trucks and containers safely, efficiently and effectively.

Understanding the signs of the time, realising that adequate and efficient use of vehicle parking space has increasingly become a major challenge in metropolitan cities, we also pursued an agency agreement in 1989, for the car parking systems of the German Klaus Multiparking GmbH. With their mechanical car parking systems, globally renowned for their reliability and efficiency, we were now able to increase the parking capacity of our customers up to 90 percent. One of our prime automated car parking systems projects is shown below; the 4-storey storage and retrieval system which can accommodate 140 parking spaces at Club Street, Singapore.

Expanding Reach & Capabilities

1990

With the start of 1990s started for us, we decided to increase our presence further in all major ASEAN countries, beginning with the formation of MHE in the Philippines in 1990 and then setting up a representative office in Vietnam in 1993. This would give us a visible and practical advantage over our competitors, who would merely have agents representing their companies in South East Asia – we, on the other hand, would be directly on-site and could deliver solutions strait away and therefore establish a healthy relationship with our valued customers. In the meantime, to provide space to increased man-power and production as more and more orders were coming in, we also opened new headquarters and operational facilities in 1992, at Gul Circle, Singapore.

1991

Apart from regional expansion we also constantly sharpened our company profile on the product level and forged new partnership to meet all of our customers needs. In 1991 we reached an agency agreement with the British Gantry Railing Ltd. They offer all the products required for the installation of crane rails under their Gantrail brand and were thus a logical choice to enhance our own product portfolio. With the Gantrail adjustable rail clips and pads for mounting of crane rails, MHE-Demag could now offer a complete solution comprising consultancy, design, supply, installation and preventive maintenance services for crane rails.

1993

To reflect the world-renowned Demag brand in a better way, we rebranded from MHE into MHE-Demag in 1993. The name Demag, originally an abbreviation for 'Deutsche Maschinenfabrik AG' ('German engineering works corporation'), has been established as a brand in 1910 and has build up an outstanding reputation ever since.

1996

Three years later we would reach another milestone when we were able to celebrate the delivery of our 10,000th crane on December 4, 1996. The purchaser of this special crane was Sembawang Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd, one of the leading engineering and construction companies in South East Asia, and nowadays part of the Punj Lloyd group.

1997

Shortly after our 25th anniversary celebrations in 1997, we rebranded yet again, as we changed our name from MHE-Demag to MHE-Dematic, when Mannesmann Demag Fördertechnik AG was renamed Mannesmann Dematic AG. However, in 2002 we would change our name back to MHE-Demag however, after the formation of Demag Cranes & Components GmbH.

In 1997, yet another strategic partnership which we are proud to have since the 1990s, was forged with the licensing & technical know-how agreement with Vetter Foerdertechnik GmbH. Together with this leading European supplier of slewing jib cranes and crane systems we were able assist our customers with their material handling from yet another angle. The equipment, which is easily handled by a single person, can quickly swing over to the material that needs to be handled, saving the operator time and effort of manoeuvring a forklift or an overhead crane to the items.

1999

At the brink of the new millennium, in 1999, we made the assessment that it is time for us to upgrade our company software to improve our database management and our internal and external business communications. Therefore, along with the whole group of Jebsen & Jessen SEA, we took the opportunity to invest in a new IT platform. Implementing SAP, a comprehensive business software solution, was a major task resulting in a system of unusual depth as well as breadth. We were now able to monitor, control and research our operations better than ever, and to compile detailed analyses of our business statistics in order to share business knowledge across our departments and divisions. It would not only improve our understanding of our business with essential key learning points, but also boost our employee engagement and motivation. The implementation was so successful, that in 2003 Jebsen & Jessen SEA was even rewarded with a top 100 listing in CIO Asia magazine as one of Asia's top performing IT users.

2001

At MHE-Demag we believe in the importance of a strong business culture that comprises of a relentless pursuit of perfection, committed to continuously exceed the highest standards with a scrupulous work ethic. Due to this spirit we were awarded several certifications and other acknowledgements of business excellence in the 2000s.

In 2001, for instance, MHE-Demag in Singapore was awarded the People Developer Standard for our approach towards human resource management, which more extensively engages our staff in the business of the organisation and challenges them to scale new heights, both for the organisation and for themselves. The People Developer Standard is based on a business excellence framework and covers leadership, planning, information, people and results.

2002

About this time we also started to implement ISO standards and our outstanding quality management consequently earned us an ISO 9001 certification. The certification attests to our ability to consistently provide products that meet both customer requirements and applicable regulations. Complying with the ISO standard further helps us to enhance our customer satisfaction through the effective application of our quality management system, including processes to continually improve the system and ensure conformity to both customer requirements and applicable regulations. Our headquarters in Singapore received ISO certification in 2002, with Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam following suit in succeeding years.

We also pursued compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards at the same time, first obtaining recognition in Malaysia in 2002 and then in all our other branches in the two following years. The ISO 14001 standard gives the requirements for environmental management systems, and confirms its global relevance for organisations wishing to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner. OHSAS 18001, the Occupation Health and Safety Assessment Series, is an international specification for health and safety management systems. It provides a framework that enhances our safety culture, as it allows our organisation to consistently identify and control health and safety risks, to reduce the potential for accidents and improve overall performance.

2003

Whilst working hard on the implementation of these standards, we also continued the growth of our company with valuable partnerships and extensions of our product and service portfolio. In 2003, for instance, we forged a strategic partnership with Gottwald Port Technology GmbH in the territories of Singapore, the Philippines and Brunei. The company, based in Düsseldorf, Germany, is also a subsidiary of Demag Cranes AG and provides products for material handling in ports and terminals. Among other great achievements, Gottwald Port Technology is acknowledged as the inventor of mobile harbour cranes and as well as being a trendsetter in the automation of container handling market.

2004

In 2004, we took another step to improve our presence in Vietnam when we set up new production facilities south of Ho Chi Minh City in Binh Duong.

We also continued to expand our product range with agency agreements for Plumettaz S.A. and Kawahara in 2004. Plumettaz is specialised in cable laying products, suspended access equipment and other tailor-made industry solutions, such as winch adaptable modules for vehicles and machines. Kawahara is a supplier with a range of scissor lifts, which would also prove to be a very good addition to our product portfolio as they allow for a wide variety of applications in the material handling and maintenance industry.

2005

In the following year we also renewed our agency agreement with the former Mannesmann Anlagenbau division, which had recently become an independent enterprise under the name of Manntech. The renewed agreement would complete our range of building maintenance units again. Now, MHE was able to provide customised solutions ranging from sophisticated roof-powered machines to simpler setups, such as motorised trolleys, monorail davits and sockets, gantries and ladders.

2006

In 2006, we introduced the JD Neuhaus air hoists to our portfolio. The JD Neuhaus air hoist provides oil-free operation with permanent motor lubrication and is used in a wide range of applications, especially in hazardous environments.

2007

2007 marked the launch of our very own explosion-proof crane and hoist range. Our explosion-proof electric rope and chain hoists can operate safely in hazardous environments up to ATEX/IEC zone 1 and temperature class T4 in all gas groups (I, IIA, IIB and IIC).

Our vast product portfolio was extended yet again in 2008, when we formed an agency agreement with Donati Sollevamenti S.r.l., an Italian supplier of high-quality hoists and cranes which has cultivated a tradition of excellence since 1930. They complement our portfolio perfectly, so we can cover all customers' needs and provide the best suitable cranes and components for their projects.

At this time the growth of our company also made it necessary to move into larger facilities in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Therefore MHE-Demag Indonesia relocated to the Graha Inti Fauzi Building in Southern Indonesia, while MHE-Demag Thailand moved into a new operational facility at Hi-Tech Industrial Park in the Ayutthaya province. A year later our sales office in Vietnam relocated to the Sailing Tower in Ho Chi Minh City.

2009

Always striving to improve ourselves in exceeding our customers' expectations we also went Online with a new web based CRM system in 2009. The SAP software helps us to monitor and understand our customers better and gives us real-time support to co-ordinate our sales, services and marketing activities at every level of customer interaction. After all, our customers are our most valuable asset and we want to go all the way in making our customers happy at every contact.

Another wonderful moment came when our Singapore branch received the bizSAFE Star Award in 2009. Under the auspices of the Singaporean Workplace Safety and Health Council and supported by the Ministry of Manpower, the bizSAFE programme promotes workplace health and safety in Singapore. The award celebrates the top companies in recognition of their commitment and exemplary standards in workplace health and safety.

Taking on New Challenges Ahead

With almost 40 years in the business, we are still growing strong. This is why we have just expanded, opening a new branch in Taiwan in 2010, where we will increase our efforts to give our customers the best care on the spot.

Looking ahead, we have confidence in ourselves thanks to thorough preparation for the challenges to come. Whatever the future will bring, we remain in a positive spirit, with a positive outlook, because we know how to brace ourselves for difficult times and can draw from the experience gained over the last 40 years.
